Projectpier is an open source fork of activeCollab. It is alternative similar to BaseCamp.
Since it is open source and uses PHP & MySQL, it is easy to install, especially in hosted environments.
It was easy to install and has a nice, informative website, but I’m not impressed with the features yet.
I’ve only used it for a few minutes, but my first gripe was that I couldn’t add an existing task list to a milestone.
I don’t know if it quite has the domain model right. And it’s ease of use could be better. Adding 6 tasks when creating a task list is an improvment over basecamp (and it is snappier — but that might be the difference between local install and web based.) I’ll try projectpier on qa-site.com to compare latency.
Tags are an improvement over basecamp, but I don’t feel it’s quite right.

Hi there,
My name is Nick Matteucci and I co-founded http://www.VCSonline.com 9+ years ago because I was frustrated with project management software. It was too complex, expensive, and cumbersome for the people who were trying to collaborate, manage portfolios, and get their hands around resource capacity planning (and NOT just satisfy ridiculous management reporting requirements).
If you want simple, sensible, and supportable web-based project management software, I would welcome you to try the VPMi Express ($5/user/month). For most companies, VPMi Express is cheaper then Open Source hosting and very capable (unlimited documents, projects, real workplans, issues, timesheets, and status reports).
Both versions are free for first 30 days and we have an extensive video training collection to help you get started.
We started in 1998 and this has been our life’s work and have over 30,000 happy customers all over the world.
I wish you luck in whatever you land on and you can feel free to write us with any questions you might have.
Best Regards,
Nick Matteucci

I feel DeskAway (http://www.deskaway.com) is much better than Project Pier.
In our company we are using Valleyspeak Project Server and i think it is better. ValleySpeak Project Server can be used as a Microsoft Project viewer and more. Not only can the team members see Microsoft Project schedules, they can also submit updates for their tasks on the schedules. One of the important aspects of ValleySpeak Project Server is its browser based access to Microsoft Project files for Team Members. Project Managers can continue using Microsoft Project while Team Members can access project status from any computer running any operating system, leading to dramatically lower costs than buying Microsoft Project for each Team Member.
